While I was walking in the forest at a nature preserve, I saw a toy soldier perched in a tree as though someone had left it there. I thought it was interesting, so I took a photo of it. I assumed it was the only plastic soldier randomly put in the forest, but to my surprise I saw another hidden in the moss on a tree! By the end of the hike I had seen several more soldiers hidden in the forest. I enjoyed searching for them and finding them in unexpected places.
Because of their content, these photos automatically bring war to mind. We give toy soldiers to children to play with, even though war is not a game and is very serious in reality. I tried to express this idea in my photos. I showed the toy soldiers with backgrounds that mimic life-sized environments, which is contrasted with the shallow depth of field that shows that they really are tiny.
